The dental pulp regenerative therapy is for teeth that had lost dental pulp due to deep caries. Autologous dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) isolated from discarded teeth like wisdom teeth are transplanted into the teeth after root canal treatment and disinfection. This allows the pulp to be regenerated to the original state.

RIKEN was established in 1917 as the only research institute for natural science in Japan thanks to visionary financial support, which included the Imperial Household grant and contributions from industry and government. In April 2002, RIKEN Kobe campus opened as a research hub in the KOBE Biomedical Innovation Cluster promoted by Kobe city, and today, it is recognized as an international research base. More than 1,200 scientists and staff members work at the Kobe campus where joint research is conducted in collaboration with other medical institutions, research institutions and companies to solve various societal problems and shape the future of science.
The RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research (BDR) seeks to identify mechanisms underlying the processes of development, growth, and aging from the molecular scale to the organism as a whole, with the goal of better understanding human health and disease, applying fundamental research outcomes in emerging fields such as regenerative medicine, in the hopes of helping to extend healthy lifespans.
Laboratories at the BDR study the mechanisms underlying the generation and regeneration of tissues and organs in three dimensions, and behind the processes of aging and disease, with the ultimate goal of learning more about how a single fertilized egg is able to develop into a complex body capable of growth and maturation.
BDR scientists are working on imaging various molecules and cells with biological functions using a variety of techniques, including PET and MRI, with the goal of better understanding how molecules and cells interact within a highly interconnected organ system.
The RIKEN Center for Computational Science (R-CCS) conducts research on high performance computing (HPC) & computational science, and on software development for practical applications. As the leadership center of HPC, researchers at R-CCS explore “the science of computing, the science by computing, and the science for computing.”
Development of the supercomputer Fugaku
The supercomputer Fugaku, developed by RIKEN and Fujitsu, is planned to go into full operation around 2021. Fugaku will be used in a variety of areas such as drug discovery, prediction and mitigation of natural disasters, and industrial simulations. Fugaku will also become a platform for AI and big data research, fulfilling the needs of the society in the 21st century.
The Integrated Innovation Building (IIB) opened in 2015 as a RIKEN center to serve as a hub for collaboration between academia and industry. Since then, various industries have conducted collaborative research with RIKEN. RIKEN’s Interdisciplinary Theoretical and Mathematical Sciences Program (iTHEMS), which aims to shape the future of science through the study and application of mathematics, also uses IIB as its base in Kobe. Numerous seminars and events are held in the auditorium and other spaces, which are also available to outside users (a usage fee applies).
