RIKEN

RIKEN was established in 1917 as the only research institute for natural science in Japan thanks to visionary financial support, which included the Imperial Household grant and contributions from industry and government. In April 2002, RIKEN Kobe campus opened as a research hub in the KOBE Biomedical Innovation Cluster promoted by Kobe city, and today, it is recognized as an international research base. More than 1,200 scientists and staff members work at the Kobe campus where joint research is conducted in collaboration with other medical institutions, research institutions and companies to solve various societal problems and shape the future of science.

RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research (BDR)

The RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research (BDR) seeks to identify mechanisms underlying the processes of development, growth, and aging from the molecular scale to the organism as a whole, with the goal of better understanding human health and disease, applying fundamental research outcomes in emerging fields such as regenerative medicine, in the hopes of helping to extend healthy lifespans.

  • ●Understanding the mechanisms behind the life cycle

    Laboratories at the BDR study the mechanisms underlying the generation and regeneration of tissues and organs in three dimensions, and behind the processes of aging and disease, with the ultimate goal of learning more about how a single fertilized egg is able to develop into a complex body capable of growth and maturation.


  • ● Understanding the mechanisms of molecules, cells and organs

    BDR scientists are working on imaging various molecules and cells with biological functions using a variety of techniques, including PET and MRI, with the goal of better understanding how molecules and cells interact within a highly interconnected organ system.


RIKEN Center for Computational Science (R-CCS)

The RIKEN Center for Computational Science (R-CCS) operates the K computer, and has been developing the post-K computer. We also conduct research on high performance computing & computational science, and software development for practical application.

  • ● K computer

    The K computer, developed and maintained by RIKEN, began full operation for shared use in September 2012. In November 2011, it successfully achieved the computational performance goal of 10 petaflops; the capacity to process one “Kei” (10 quadrillion) calculations per second. A variety of sophisticated simulations performed using the K computer have greatly helped researchers obtain new insights in science and have helped industries to enhance their competitiveness.


  • ● Development of the post-K computer

    Aiming to start its operation for shared use around 2021, development has advanced for the successor to the K computer. By taking full advantage of the technologies, human resources and applications gained through years of operating the K computer, we aim to develop the most advanced, versatile supercomputer in the world.


Integrated Innovation Building (IIB)

The Integrated Innovation Building (IIB) opened in 2015 as a RIKEN center for promoting collaboration between academia and industry, which remains its mission to this day. The Compass to Healthy Life Research Program (RCH) is primarily based in the IIB. RIKEN's Interdisciplinary Theoretical and Mathematical Sciences Program (iTHEMS), which aims to shape the future of science through the study and application of mathematics, also uses IIB as its base in Kobe. Numerous seminars and events are also hosted by IIB labs.
